A cold radiator is frustrating. No heating or hot water is different: it can quickly affect your family’s comfort, your ability to wash, and, during colder weather, the condition of your home. Before assuming the boiler has failed completely, there are a few safe checks worth making. Just as importantly, know when to stop and call a qualified Gas Safe engineer.
For homeowners and landlords in Bolton and the surrounding areas, a rapid diagnosis can often prevent a small issue becoming a longer, more expensive breakdown.
No heating or hot water: start with safety
If you can smell gas, hear hissing near a gas appliance, or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, do not investigate the boiler. Turn off the gas supply at the meter only if it is safe to do so, open doors and windows, leave the property, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Do not use electrical switches, naked flames or a mobile phone inside the property.
A yellow or floppy flame on a gas appliance, black marks around the boiler, unusual headaches or nausea can also be warning signs. Get fresh air and arrange professional advice straight away. Boilers and gas appliances should never be opened, adjusted or repaired by anyone who is not Gas Safe registered.
If there are no gas safety concerns, take a calm look at the simple things first. It is useful to note what the boiler display says, whether any lights are flashing and whether the heating, hot water or both have stopped. That information helps an engineer get to the likely cause faster.
Check the controls before the boiler
It is surprisingly common for the issue to be with the controls rather than the boiler itself. Check that your programmer or smart thermostat is set to heating and hot water, that the clock is correct after a power cut, and that the target temperature is above the current room temperature.
If you use Hive, Nest or another smart control, check the batteries, app settings and receiver. A flat thermostat battery or lost connection can make a healthy boiler appear unresponsive. Turn the heating up temporarily and listen for the boiler attempting to fire.
Also check the electrical supply. Is the boiler’s fused spur switched on? Has a circuit breaker tripped? If a breaker will not reset or trips again, leave it off and call an engineer or electrician. Repeated tripping is a fault to investigate, not something to keep overriding.
For prepayment gas meters, check there is credit available and that any emergency credit has not run out. If other gas appliances, such as a hob, are not working either, the gas supply or meter may be part of the problem.
Look at the boiler display and pressure gauge
Modern boilers often show an error code when they lock out. Make a note of the exact code, the boiler make and model, and any message on screen. Avoid repeatedly resetting the boiler. One reset may be reasonable if the manufacturer’s instructions allow it, but a boiler that continually locks out needs diagnosis.
The pressure gauge is another useful clue on a sealed central-heating system. Many systems operate at around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, although the correct setting can vary. If the gauge is close to zero, the boiler may not run because there is not enough water in the system.
Some homeowners are comfortable repressurising a system using the filling loop, following the boiler manufacturer’s instructions. Only do this if you know where the correct valves are and can do it safely. Do not overfill the system. More importantly, if pressure keeps dropping, do not treat regular topping-up as the answer. It may point to a leak, a faulty expansion vessel or a pressure relief valve issue that needs professional repair.
If pressure is unusually high, or water is dripping from an external pipe, switch the heating off and arrange an inspection. These signs can be connected and are best dealt with properly rather than masked.
Why the heating and hot water can fail together
When both services stop at once, the cause may be a boiler lockout, low system pressure, a frozen condensate pipe, a power problem, lack of gas supply or a fault with an internal component. The right answer depends on the boiler and what it is doing at the time.
A frozen condensate pipe is more likely during a cold snap, particularly where the pipe runs outside. The boiler may display a fault code or make gurgling sounds before locking out. If the external pipe is clearly accessible, it can sometimes be thawed gently with warm, not boiling, water. Never use a flame, boiling water or force on pipework. If you are unsure, leave it alone and call an engineer.
On a combi boiler, both heating and hot water rely on the same appliance, so one boiler fault can remove both. In homes with a hot-water cylinder, the boiler, programmer, motorised valves, cylinder thermostat or system wiring could be responsible. An immersion heater may provide a temporary source of hot water in some properties, but it will not fix the underlying heating fault.
When hot water works but radiators stay cold
This is a different pattern and often narrows the investigation. The boiler may be working, but heat is not reaching the radiators correctly. The cause could be a thermostat setting, stuck motorised valve, circulation pump issue, air in the system, sludge in radiators or an issue with the heating controls.
Check whether every radiator is cold or only one or two. If a radiator is cold at the top but warm lower down, it may need bleeding. Take care: radiators and water can be hot, and bleeding should be done with the heating switched off and the system cooled where possible. If radiators are cold at the bottom, that can suggest sludge build-up, which needs a different solution.
Avoid turning radiator valves at random or draining the system. A proper assessment can identify whether a radiator repair, balancing, system clean or component replacement is the sensible route.
When heating works but there is no hot water
If the radiators warm up but taps only run cold, the problem may be with domestic hot-water production rather than the whole heating system. On a combi boiler, common causes include a diverter valve fault, flow sensor issue or blocked plate heat exchanger. On a cylinder system, the cylinder thermostat, motorised valve, programmer or immersion heater may need attention.
Try a hot tap fully open for a short time and see whether the boiler responds. If it does not, record that detail for the engineer. Do not remove the boiler casing or attempt to access internal parts. What looks like a minor hot-water fault can involve gas, electrics and pressurised water systems.
What to do while you wait for an engineer
Keep everyone warm with extra layers, blankets and safe electric heating where needed. Keep portable heaters well away from curtains, furniture and drying clothes, and never leave them unattended. If temperatures are low, protect exposed pipes where you can and open cupboard doors under sinks to allow warmer air to circulate.
If you are a landlord, loss of heating or hot water should be treated seriously, particularly for vulnerable tenants or during cold weather. Respond promptly, keep tenants informed and arrange a competent engineer. Tenants should report the issue as soon as possible, include any boiler code or safety concern, and avoid unauthorised repairs.
Before an engineer arrives, clear access to the boiler, airing cupboard, hot-water cylinder and affected radiators. Have the boiler make, model, fault code and a brief timeline ready. Mention recent power cuts, pressure loss, leaks, building work or repeated faults. Clear information saves time and supports a more accurate first visit.
Get the right repair, not just a quick reset
A reset may restore heating temporarily, but recurring breakdowns deserve a proper diagnosis. A qualified engineer should identify why the boiler locked out, check the safe operation of the appliance and explain the repair options in plain language. Sometimes the answer is a straightforward part replacement; with an older, unreliable boiler, the sensible conversation may be about repair costs, efficiency and replacement options.
